Wits Students Take To The Streets Accuse Nsfas Of Being Unreasonable

Wits University students protest because they cannot afford tuition and residence fees. Students are currently protesting on campus and earlier brought traffic to a standstill on Empire Road, Johannesburg. Security measures have been tightened at the institution’s entrances, and classes have been cancelled.

In addition to granting registration to students who owe less than R150 000, the SRC wants the R10 000 upfront residence fee waived, as well as allowing students to move into residences.

According to Lesego, one of the protesting students, who spoke to SABC News,

•  The  protest is about the SRC fighting for students who cannot register, because the institution is financially excluding them. We are talking about students who are academically qualified, (and) students who have historical debt.

One of the issues on their list is the R45 000 accommodation cap set by NSFAS.

What happens to students from places like Lusikisiki? 

Their goal is to obtain a degree at Wits and improve their families.

 What happened to that?

 Additionally, we are fighting the NSFAS’ capped amount of R45,000. Could you tell me where you can find an accommodation in Joburg that costs R 45 000? The NSFAS is being unreasonable!
