It has been reported that Sibongile Mani has been elected treasurer of the Walter Sisulu University (WSU) Eastern Cape convocation committee, but confirmation will only come later this week once “vetting” has taken place.

Recently, an online campaign poster for Mani was circulated.As part of the institution’s efforts to raise funds, WSU holds its convocation.After R14m was erroneously transferred to her student bank account by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), Mani was found guilty of theft by an East London regional court. 

Before the Intellimali system picked up the error, she spent more than R800,000. During last February’s East London regional court hearing, she was granted leave to appeal her sentence. 

Mani’s campaign manager Athenkosi Fani announced on Sunday that she had been elected treasurer.Misheck Mugabe, the convocation secretary-general, told TimesLIVE that the results would be announced after seven days. Following “proper vetting of candidates’ eligibility”, the university said it would announce the results this week.

As an independent voice for change, Mani “remained steadfast in her commitment”.
