Changes in Allowance Payment Method
Going forward, NSFAS allowance payments will be made on a monthly basis, but there is a significant change – the payments will be directly deposited into students’ NSFAS bank accounts, offering added benefits.
August Allowance Details
For the month of August, students enrolled in distance universities will qualify for a personal care allowance of R3,045 if they are registered for an equivalent full-time course credit load of at least 120 course credits per year. Students enrolled for less than 60 course credits will only receive the learning material allowance.
Non-catered university residences will receive an annual living allowance of R15,750. This comprises a personal care allowance of R3,045 per year and a meal allowance of R12,705.
Student Accommodation Allowance
All institutions owned or leased, as well as private accommodations, will be capped at R45,000 per academic year for student accommodation allowances. Private accommodation service providers will receive payments directly from NSFAS or institutions.
Challenges and Interventions
Although the newly introduced direct payment system has encountered challenges, resulting in delayed allowance payments for some students, NSFAS is committed to resolving these issues. The scheme has taken note of the complaints raised by affected students and will implement intervention measures accordingly.
Onboarding for Allowance Receipt
NSFAS urges all funded students to onboard themselves onto the system to ensure they begin receiving their allowances directly from June 2023. This will streamline the payment process and minimize delays.
Staying informed and following the necessary procedures will ensure a smooth disbursement of funds for all eligible students, enabling them to focus on their studies without financial worries.
