Social Security Updates : 12 New Allowances Considered for Disability Applications
The SSA regularly updates the list of conditions under the CAL program, reflecting the latest medical knowledge, diagnostic advancements, and changes in medical practice. On August 14, the SSA introduced 12 new conditions to the Compassionate Allowances list, encompassing chromosome disorders, rare tumors, and specific cancers.
As per the recent SSA press release, the CAL initiative now covers 278 conditions. Through this program, the SSA has granted Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits to almost 900,000 individuals with severe disabilities.
Acting Commissioner Kilolo Kijakazi emphasized the SSA’s dedication, stating, “We are steadfast in our commitment to ensuring eligible individuals access their benefits. The Compassionate Allowances program is a testament to this, as it accelerates the application process for those with the gravest disabilities.”
The CAL program’s success is attributed to its collaboration with medical professionals, including doctors and researchers. They offer insights on which medical conditions should be part of the Compassionate Allowances list. The SSA sources information for CAL conditions from advocacy groups, the Social Security and Disability Determination Service communities, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and feedback from public outreach hearings.
