Expanded Work Requirements

In essence, a broader segment of low-income Americans will now be obligated to engage in employment-related activities to qualify for food assistance. Specifically, able-bodied adults aged up to 50, without dependent children, must demonstrate their work engagement for a minimum of 80 hours each month. Alternatively, they can prove enrollment in an educational or training program to continue receiving SNAP benefits.

Age Requirement Adjustment

Notably, starting in October, the age threshold for these work requirements will increase to 52, encompassing a larger demographic.

Exemptions in Place

However, certain groups are exempt from these new mandates. This includes homeless individuals, veterans, and young adults up to the age of 24 who have aged out of foster care.

Potential Impact

According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, approximately 750,000 adults may find themselves at risk of losing their SNAP benefits due to these changes.
