Joint Press Conference

In a joint press conference held in Pretoria on Thursday, ministers Lindiwe Zulu (Social Development) and Mondli Gungubele (Communications and Digital Technologies) expressed sincere regret to social grant recipients who faced difficulties accessing their funds the previous week.

Ministers’ Statements

Minister Gungubele stated, “Government assures South Africa and social grant beneficiaries that all outstanding payments will be made in full.” He also announced that Postbank and SASSA staff would be present in communities throughout the week to monitor progress and assist recipients who may require guidance.

System Issues Explained

Gungubele explained that system issues resulted in “transaction incomplete errors” due to communication timeouts. These errors are common in banking payment systems but often go unnoticed because of automated reversal functionality.

Resolution and Fund Reversals

The system challenges affecting Postbank were resolved on the morning of September 6, 2023. Postbank conducted more than 500,000 fund reversals, ensuring affected recipients received their social grant payments. The process, however, took longer than expected due to manual procedures.
