According to the South African Government’s website, social grants do indeed have an expiration date. The website states, “The social grant lapses when beneficiaries fail to claim for a period of three consecutive months.” In other words, if you have not collected your grant for three months in a row, it will expire, and you will need to reapply.
How to Reapply or Appeal for SASSA SRD
So, what do you do if your social grant has lapsed or expired? SASSA allows grant beneficiaries to reapply for previous social grants within 90 days after the grant has expired.
If your reapplication is approved, grants will be paid as usual from the date of re-acceptance. However, if you miss the 90-day deadline, you will have to follow a different procedure and apply for your respective social grant from scratch. Applications for reapplication have to be made in writing, and the easiest way to do this is by visiting your nearest SASSA office with the required documents.
