Distribution of Increased Grants
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) is set to distribute over 18 million permanent grants during the first week of October 2023. This marks the second increase in grant payments this year.
Types of Permanent Grants
Sassa provides various permanent grants to vulnerable South Africans, including the Older Persons grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Child Support grant, Foster Care grant, Care Dependency Grant, and the Grant-In-Aid.
Across-the-Board Increase
All permanent grants distributed by Sassa will see a boost of R10 in October 2023.
Updated Grant Payment Amounts
Here’s a breakdown of the revised grant payment amounts:
- Older Persons Grant, Care Dependency grant, and Disability grant: R2090
- War Veterans grant: R2110
- Foster Child grant: R1130
- Child Support Grant and Grant-in-Aid: R510
Unaffected Grants
The Child Support Top-Up grant remains unchanged, building upon the existing Child Support grant. Introduced in 2022, it aims to support orphaned children in South Africa without necessitating the foster care process due to caregivers’ financial constraints.
Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant
The SRD grant will maintain its value at R350 in October 2023, as the Department of Social Development’s request for an increase was not approved due to fiscal constraints.
Grant Payment Dates
October 2023 grant payments will commence on Tuesday, 3 October 2023, beginning with the distribution of older persons’ grants. The payment schedule for October is as follows:
- Older Persons Grant: October 3, 2023
- Disability Grant: October 4, 2023
- Children’s Grants: October 5, 2023
SRD Grant Payment Dates
SRD grant payments for October 2023 will adhere to the agency’s standard payment schedule, occurring towards the end of the month. Payments will be made from 25 October 2023, with the final payments issued on 31 October 2023. Beneficiaries can expect the SRD grants to reflect in their bank accounts approximately 2-3 working days after Sassa processes the payments.
