Werksmans Attorneys Uncover Irregularities

The NSFAS board entrusted Werksmans Attorneys with the task of scrutinizing irregularities associated with CEO Andile Nongogo, who had been placed on special leave in August 2023 following serious allegations against him. Chairperson of the NSFAS Board, Ernest Khosa, has received the completed report, which is scheduled for presentation to the board in the coming week.

This investigation, conducted by Werksmans Attorneys, aimed to examine allegations of corruption against Nongogo and assess NSFAS’ procurement systems.

Probing the Financial Entities and Tender Relationships

The primary objectives of the investigation included verifying the registration status of service providers as financial entities and assessing any historical business or tender relationships between the CEO and these companies.

The allegations of corruption against Nongogo pertain to his previous work with Services SETA (SSETA) and have raised concerns about potential improprieties in the awarding of contracts for the direct disbursement of allowances from NSFAS.

Positive Reception by Student Union

The South African Union of Students (SAUS) has welcomed NSFAS’s commitment to investigating allegations against its CEO. SAUS spokesperson Asive Dlanjwa expressed cautious optimism regarding the competency of some service providers responsible for disbursing NSFAS allowances.

While there is uncertainty about any foul play, several concerns have been raised since the introduction of the direct payment system, including issues with registration, bank charges, and accessing allowance funds.

Uncertainty Surrounding Allowance Disbursement

SAUS has noted that while many students have been integrated into the new payment system, it remains unclear whether they have received their allowances. This is particularly concerning as exams approach. Dlanjwa emphasizes the critical importance of students receiving their allowances on time and hopes that all actions taken are in the best interest of the student community. The student union underlines the necessity of a fair and lawful process.
