NSFAS Allowances for September 2023: What to Expect. As the 2023 academic year progresses, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) continues to disburse funds to tertiary students across the country. With the rollout of a new payment system starting in June, and September just around the corner, it’s important for students to stay informed about the upcoming NSFAS allowance payments.
Funding Overview
For the current academic year, over 1 million tertiary students across South Africa’s public universities and TVET colleges are receiving financial support from NSFAS. The scheme has been allocated a budget of R47.6 million for this period. Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande, highlighted that the allowance payments have been adjusted for inflation.
New Payment System and Benefits
Nzimande confirmed that monthly NSFAS allowance payments will continue, but with a significant change – they will now be directly deposited into students’ NSFAS bank accounts. This transition to direct payments brings added advantages to beneficiaries.
Determining September NSFAS Allowances
Personal Care Allowance
Distance university students eligible for a personal care allowance must be enrolled in an equivalent full-time course credit load. They are entitled to an annual personal care allowance of R3,045. To qualify, these students need to be registered for a minimum of 120 course credits per year.
Learning Material Allowance
Students enrolled for fewer than 60 course credits will receive the learning material allowance.
Living Allowance for Non-Catered University Residences
NSFAS-funded university students residing in non-catered university accommodations will receive a yearly living allowance of R15,750. This includes R3,045 for personal care and R12,705 for meals.
Student Accommodation Allowance
In terms of accommodation, institutions and private accommodations will have a cap of R45,000 per academic year. For private accommodations, Nsfas or institutions will directly pay the service providers.
Challenges and Interventions
While the new direct payment system has been introduced to streamline the process, there have been reported delays in students receiving their allowance payments. To address these concerns, NSFAS is working on implementing intervention measures to rectify the issues faced by affected students.
Student Onboarding
NSFAS urges all students who are beneficiaries of the scheme to complete the onboarding process to ensure they receive their allowances seamlessly.
Conclusion
As the academic year progresses, the NSFAS allowance payments for September 2023 hold significant importance for students. Staying informed about the changes in the payment system and the specific allowances they can expect is crucial to managing their finances effectively.
