NSFAS provides monthly allowances to assist their students with the cost of attending a university or college.Aside from tuition fees, students must also pay for books, stationery, food and toiletries during their time at a university or TVET college.
How Much Does NSFAS Give For Allowances?
A number of these additional costs are covered by the allowance system that NSFAS introduced to help its students.
Government bursaries entitle students to receive student allowances, which are funds to cover study-related expenses.
Upon resumption of academic activities, NSFAS beneficiaries are provided with a monthly student allowance. NSFAS Wallet allows the student to receive these allowances directly, or via the institution to the student.
As a result of the Consumer Price Index (CPI), allowances are subject to annual increases. University funding is based on a student’s specific expenses and needs.
The bursary includes the following allowances, according to the NSFAS website:
UNIVERSITY
- Accommodations: the amount charged by the university is the actual cost. There must not be a cost over that of university residence if the residence is private.
- The cost of transport to and from the institution is approximately R7 875 per year (up to 40 km away).
- An annual allowance of R15 750 is provided for living expenses
- Allowance for books: R5 460 per year (applicable to universities only)
- An annual allowance of R3 045 is provided for personal care
TVET
- Accommodation: A catered residence is available at TVET college for R54 045 per year. In addition to self-catering accommodation, the TVET college may own or lease self-catering accommodation and receive up to R45 000 per year in living allowance. Approximately R45 000 per year for private accommodation
- The institution is within 10 km of R7 718 (by public transport).
- An annual allowance of R3 045 is provided for personal care
- R6 000 a year for living allowance
