How a Young Entrepreneur Used His NSFAS Allowance to Thrive in South Africa Business World. Starting a business can be a daunting task, especially one that quickly achieves remarkable success. South Africa, known for its high startup failure rate, poses a considerable challenge to entrepreneurs. Such individuals are often required to exhibit unwavering determination and make substantial sacrifices, including taking out loans and temporarily shelving their other dreams.

However, against all odds, a young entrepreneur has defied expectations by using his NSFAS allowance to kickstart a farming business. Meet Tulani Qwesha, who embarked on this extraordinary journey at the tender age of 22, while pursuing his Bachelor of Commerce in Economics at the University of Fort Hare (UFH).

A Seed of Inspiration

Tulani Qwesha journey into entrepreneurship was rooted in a childhood filled with admiration for his late grandfather, who diligently tended to a vegetable garden on their homestead. The valuable lesson he learned early on was that to put food on the table, one must toil the soil. With his grandfather legacy as his guiding light, he embarked on an entrepreneurial voyage, christening his business “Buxton Farm Fresh.”

Sowing the Seeds of Success

In 2021, Qwesha returned home and took the initial step of recreating his grandfather’s garden, sowing seeds that would yield fruitful results. His first harvest was sold to locals, prompting him to conduct research and engage with fruit and vegetable vendors. It was during this time that he identified a promising business opportunity: supplying and delivering produce from local farmers and fresh produce markets to retailers.

A Path Paved with Knowledge

Qwesha journey toward entrepreneurial success was further enriched by his participation in various business management training programs, including one supported by the National Youth Development Agency. His vision is to cultivate his own crops for supply to merchants, necessitating funds for essential tools and resources like an irrigation system. This vision underpins his current business initiative.

Words of Encouragement

In his quest to inspire other young people, Qwesha encourages them not to be daunted by desperation and to ponder their aspirations carefully before pursuing them. His remarkable journey serves as a testament to the remarkable achievements that can be unlocked by leveraging one’s passion and resources, even in the face of daunting odds.
