Government Raises Age Limit for SNAP Benefits in the USA. In an effort to reshape the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has implemented significant changes.
Notably, the age requirements for meeting work criteria have been adjusted, impacting both eligibility and benefits for recipients. This update aims to provide clarity on the alterations to the program.
Increased Age Limit for Work Requirements
The USDA has raised the age limit for Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWD) who must fulfill work requirements to qualify for SNAP benefits. Previously, individuals aged 18-52 were subject to these requirements.
Under the new rules, they are now mandated to work for a minimum of 80 hours per month to maintain SNAP eligibility. Failure to meet this work requirement results in a limited benefit period, allowing recipients to access SNAP benefits for only three months within a three-year period.
Exemptions for Parents
It’s essential to note that the ABAWD time limit applies solely to individuals without dependents. If you are a parent and unable to work due to childcare responsibilities, you are eligible for an exemption from these work requirements. Your ability to access SNAP benefits remains intact.
Additional Eligible Groups
Various groups are exempt from the ABAWD work requirements. These include homeless individuals, veterans, people with disabilities, pregnant women, and young adults aged 18-24 who were formerly in foster care. These categories of beneficiaries can continue to receive SNAP benefits without the need to fulfill work requirements.
Training and Education Opportunities
For those unable to secure employment, the USDA offers the option of participating in training or educational programs. Engaging in such activities can enhance your employability and increase your chances of finding a job while still receiving SNAP benefits.
Implementation Dates
These changes took effect on October 1, 2023. However, it’s important to be aware that the age limit will increase once again on October 1, 2024. Consequently, individuals aged 18-54 will be subject to the ABAWD time limit and corresponding work requirements to access SNAP benefits after this date. Stay informed to ensure you meet the necessary criteria to continue receiving assistance.
