Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont has announced that, in collaboration with the Connecticut State Department of Education, the Connecticut Department of Social Services will allocate an extra $25.1 million in special food assistance benefits. These benefits are slated to reach the families of 209,820 children on Monday, September 4, 2023.
Eligibility Criteria
Families whose children are enrolled in the free or reduced-price meals program at their schools and who receive assistance from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Family Assistance (TFA), or Medicaid (HUSKY A) will be eligible to receive these additional benefits. Each child in the eligible households will receive a one-time supplemental benefit of $120. These funds will be automatically loaded onto the electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards of qualifying households.
Governor Statement:
Governor Lamont expressed, “These supplementary SNAP benefits will ensure that children have access to nutritious food as they commence the new school year. This special assistance supplements our recent announcement to expand the free school meals program, allowing more students to enjoy breakfast and lunch without any added cost to them or their families. Our commitment remains steadfast in enhancing food security for families.”
Commissioner Perspective
Department of Social Services Commissioner Andrea Barton Reeves stated, “In August, we initiated the initial round of benefits, providing support to over 57,300 children in Connecticut. This round extends eligibility to all school-aged children, offering additional assistance to more families.”
Funding Source
The funds for this special distribution originate from the federal Summer Pandemic EBT: Children in School program.
