Child Support Grants
Single individuals should not earn more than R57,600 per year (R4,800 per month).
For married individuals, the combined income limit is R115,200 per year (R9,600 per month).
Older Persons, Disability, and War Veteran Grants
Single individuals should not earn more than R92,520 per year (R7,710 per month).
Married individuals have a combined income limit of R185,040 per year (R15,420 per month).
Care Dependency Grants
Single individuals should not earn more than R238,800 per year (R19,900 per month).
For married individuals, the combined income limit is R477,600 per year (R39,800 per month).
Foster Child Grants
No means test conducted.
R350 SRD Grant
Individuals with a monthly income exceeding R624 do not qualify for this grant.
How SASSA Determines Eligibility
Sassa employs means tests to assess applicants’ eligibility for social grants. These tests determine whether an applicant’s alternative income or assets surpass specified thresholds. Importantly, having employment does not automatically disqualify someone from receiving a social grant.
How to Apply for a SASSA Grant
If you meet the eligibility criteria for a permanent social grant, you can apply through various methods:
In-Person Application
- Visit your nearest Sassa office branch.
- Nominate someone to apply on your behalf if you are unable to do so due to illness or old age.
- Request a home visit by a Sassa official if necessary. They will assist with completing the application forms and provide a receipt as proof of the application.
Online Application
- Create an online Sassa account.
- Visit the Sassa services page and click on ‘Apply for a grant.’
- Follow the prompts to complete your application, including providing your mobile number, South African ID number, and banking details for direct deposit of your grant money.
Processing and Appeals
Sassa typically takes up to three months to process social grant applications. If your application is successful, the first payment will be made from the date of submission.
If your application is unsuccessful, Sassa will provide written reasons for the rejection. You can then lodge an application appeal within 90 days of receiving this notification.
